It Might be Time to Get a 3D Television!

If you saw Avatar in 3D, and can’t get enough of those effects, it might be time to consider grabbing an HDTV that is capable of displaying things in 3D.

This morning I got an e-mail from Best Buy telling me they now have two Samsung HDTV models that are “3D-Ready”.

What does “3D-Ready” really mean? Well there are a few things you have to remember here. These TVs will not turn everything you watch into a 3D experience; your old DVDs, TV channels, and home movies will still be is plain old 2D.

In order to take advantage of the 3D capabilities, you will also need to pick up some 3D Glasses (or grab some from the theatre!) and have some content that is actually produced as 3D. Right now there really is not much out there, but when Avatar and other 3D movies are released on Blu-ray, there will likely be 3D versions for sale as well.

James Cameron, creator of Avatar and champion of 3D, had this to say on 3D content:

“We’ve demonstrated that the 3D market is an extremely lucrative market and this is not a fad, this is not something that is going to go away. It’s going to be interesting because (3D) TVs are going to change things yet again. But the TVs are going to take awhile to catch up with the marketplace because there isn’t enough content.“

Satellite companies such as Sky have announced that they will be releasing 3D television channels this Summer, which will work on existing HD set-top boxes and come at no additional charge.

Now how much is one of these 3D HDTVs going to set you back? Here are a few of them that Gazaro is tracking:

Samsung 55″ 1080p 240Hz 3D-Ready LED HDTV

In the US, Amazon.com has the best price for this one at $2967.00.

In Canada, Best Buy has this one for $3699.99.

Samsung 46″ 1080p 240Hz 3D-Ready LED HDTV

In the US, Amazon.com has a good price at $2337.00, though Gazaro also lists a few slightly cheaper prices from other retailers on that same page.

In Canada, both Best Buy and Future Shop are selling this one for $2,899.99.

So should you get one?

Is it a good time to bring the 3D experience to your home theatre? It really comes down to you. If you are the type of person who has to have the latest and greatest technologies out there, now might be a good time to grab a 3D HDTV! If you aren’t, it might be better to wait for a better deal. Find Deals on Heartbeats by Lady Gaga

Headphones endorsed by famous people! They seem to be incredibly popular right now – as well as incredibly expensive. But don’t fear, you might still be able to afford the Beats by Dr. Dre or Heartbeats by Lady Gaga that you have always desired.

These premium headphones, made by Monster, carry a hefty $120 price tag when purchased at regular prices. Luckily there are deals out there that can save you up to $50 off the full price! Using Gazaro I searched for “Lady Gaga” and found a number of retailers selling the Heartbeats for a lot less than the regular price.

If you want the current best price, check out B&H who have the Heartbeats by Lady Gaga for just $69.95.

And if you aren’t concerned with getting brand new headphones, they also have them used for only $60.95!

Another good price that Gazaro has found on these is from Amazon who are currently selling the Heartbeats by Lady Gaga for just $83.21. A good price, though in February they were a couple bucks cheaper at $80.29.

Looking at the price trending chart for Amazon, these prices seem fair, and are certainly better than the official price of $120 and the $99 price that most retailers seem to have lowered to. Amazon’s prices tend to fluctuate a lot, as you can see in the chart below, so it can be tough to know when to buy. Looking at this chart, I wouldn’t expect to see a significantly better deal from them – though you may be able to save an extra dollar or two if you watch closely over the next few days.

The Super Bowl and HDTV Prices

Every year as the Super Bowl approaches, your TV begins to feel a little bit inadequate. But don’t worry – there are many great deals out there to quickly upgrade to that new 60-inch LCD HDTV you have always wanted.

But if you let this big purchase slip your mind until right before the Super Bowl, you may end up paying a lot more than you should. Gazaro has spotted a trend of retailers pricing HDTVs significantly higher on game day (in some instances during the whole week leading up to the game). Check out these four HDTVs we have been tracking:

Black Friday: Are you REALLY saving that much?

Looked through leaked Black Friday ads online? Made a list of items to be purchased? Checked it twice? It seems to me that no matter how hard you try to prepare for Black Friday, it’s always difficult to determine whether an advertised deal is actually a good deal or a deal at all.

It’s even worse when stores mark up the regular price the week before and try to convince you that you’re getting a huge 50% discount on the item! I’ve always wanted to do a price analysis and luckily this is where Gazaro comes in. Shameless plug: Gazaro gives you an easy to use price comparison interface, price history charts, and generated deal scores that help you determine whether to line up at 5am or sleep in and buy later.

Here’s some quick blurbs on how the different features of Gazaro work so that you know what I’m talking about in this article:

Deal score
Gazaro rates every deal between 0 and 10 by looking at historical prices, how often things come on sale, what other retailers are selling it for now, and what others have sold it for in the past.

All time lows
All time low prices are taken from Gazaro’s database. These prices may not be shown on the price trend graphs if they occurred outside the range of the graph.

Price trend graphs and Price History
Gazaro is constantly tracking the price changes of items from numerous stores. These prices are plotted on a graph to visualize possible price trends. The price history of an item can also be viewed in table form.

PC Mall previously held the prize for lowest price of $69.99 for this item, but they’re back with an even lower price for Black Friday. Other stores such as Buy.com and CompUSA are offering this hard drive for at least $50 more (at $109.99) and do not appear to be dropping. Oddly enough, we can see Newegg.com on an opposite trend and have been increasing the price of this hard drive. I’m definitely staying away from that!

Save $250?! This is too good to be true – and yes it kind of is. As you can tell by the price trend graph, Sony Style has actually been offering this item consistently for $299.99 since June, so you’re actually only saving $150 (which is still pretty darn good to me). Either way, this is still a great deal since other stores are offering it for $225 or more, and this price of $149.99 is the lowest it has ever been.

Next up we have this 8GB CF card on sale at Office Depot for $19.99 while every other store is selling it for $33 or more. Looking at the price trending graph, although the price of this card has dipped a couple times in the past, the price right now is the lowest we’ve ever seen for this memory card. The CF card for my DSLR just died 2 weeks ago… if I was in the states I would jump on this real quick!

It was stated on the Best Buy Black Friday flyer that the regular price for this item was $2599. However according to Gazaro’s records this item was only near that point in May of this year, and seems that the regular price since September has been $1850. Instead of the $999 that they claim that you will save, you are actually saving $250. We’ve seen lower prices than this in the past, and note that you can find this item cheaper on Abe’s of Maine for $1588.18.

Looking at the price trend charts of other stores we can see that many stores have offered this product in the low $300’s or high $200’s and have been decreasing in price. On Best Buy’s chart, we can see that the price was dropped to $299.99 for approximately a month, and then rose back up to $399.99 in November… probably in preparation for Black Friday?

Does a product being advertised in the New York Times mean that it’s a good deal? In this case – not at all. First off, J&R claims that the regular price is $999.99, but according to our database, we haven’t seen that since March! There’s at least 5 other stores that have this TV for the same price, and by looking at their price trending graphs we can see that this sale price is not a huge difference from the regular selling price. Deal score of 5.3? I’d say bad deal and another pricing trick to look out for.

4. Canon Vixia HF200 Hi Def Flash Memory Camcorder

Deal score: 5.0

Saving $200 on a camcorder looks pretty good, and this price is the lowest that we’ve seen at J&R for this camcorder. However, looking at the price trend chart we can see that this camcorder has been at the price of $549 since October. This item was listed as a Black Friday sale item, but there was no price drop! Also, if we look at the price trends at other stores, we can see that a couple other stores are following the same trend and are offering this item at the same price. It may be a decent price for this camera, but definitely doesn’t look like a deal to me.

There definitely needs to be more transparency in how stores set their deals. For a number of sale items that are in this post, the stores increased the price of the item a week before before bringing them down again so it seems like they’re giving huge discounts. Some haven’t even dropped in price but are just advertised as a deal. But until then, you can always rely on Gazaro to check if you’re getting the most out of your so called deal!

Finding Coupons Where You Least Expect It

Coupons come in many forms – print outs, cut outs, and grocery store tear offs just to name a few. But would you believe me if I told you that there you can redeem a coupon by taking a picture of an advertisement on the bus? Companies have thought of many creative ways to bring you coupons and for you to redeem coupons, recently more popular via social media. Why? Social media outlets such as Facebook or Twitter are designed for users to share items with complete ease. This means once a coupon picks up speed, the distribution of the coupon will spread through the user base like wildfire. Here are a few interesting places to find coupons where you least expect it.

Facebook

Many companies will offer exclusive coupons only accessible through Facebook. Usually these are posted on the product’s official “fan page” where users can find more information about the product and discuss related topics with other users. One recent example of a Facebook offer is a coupon for $1 off a cup of Dippin’ Dots ice cream.

Once you “become a fan” of a product or company, you will receive updates from them on your news feed. Sometimes companies promote giveaways or special sales through Facebook Events – such as Ben and Jerry’s free ice cream day. Keep an eye out on your friends’ events and posted items, and watch for updates from the products you’re fans of. You never know, maybe Gazaro will have a special Facebook promotion in the future

Twitter

Exclusive coupons are often posted on Twitter as well. Usually these are in the form of coupon codes that are shown directly in the tweet, or as a link to an image of a coupon. To find these, “follow” your favourite restauarant or store to be informed of any deals right away, subscribe to coupon aggregators such as CouponTweet or CheapTweet, or simply search for “coupon” on Twitter search. Don’t forget to use these coupons with your next Gazaro purchase!

On the road

I was just sitting on the bus and an advertisement like this caught my eye. I can get a discount if I take a picture of this ad and bring it into the store? Awesome!

It seems like coupons via your cell phone, or mobile coupons, are getting popular. You can pull an image of the coupon up on your phone and show the image to the cashier to redeem it. Some coupons can be scanned straight from your phone by the cashier. One can even take a picture of an advertisement and send it to a specific number, and the advertiser will send back exclusive content using image recognition technology.

Do these look familiar? These Quick Response codes (above) can be seen on FedEx or Amazon packages for tracking. In Tokyo however, tracking is only the beginning. “In malls, stores have printed QR codes on the handrails of the escalators. When you point your phone at them, up pops a coupon for 20 percent off a haircut at the salon up on the third floor, along with photos of the latest haircuts. It’s amazing.” (Source: Newspaper Association of America).

In Korea, a common service used in the younger circles allows users to send gift certificates for various items to each other, while retailers can use the same technology to send coupons to these users. Retailers scan the barcode in the message to process the coupon. Closer to home, retailers such as JC Penney and Starbucks are giving out free coupons via cell phones. By texting “JCP” to a special number, you can bring your cellphone to a JC Penney where they will have 2D barcode scanners to process your coupon. These coupons will be available this holiday season so keep an eye out for them!

A pool?…who wouldn’t want a pool? Everyone wants a pool!

Only thing stopping you from taking the plunge is that money is tight? Well with our savings, you’ll still be able to purchase what you need and save for what you want!
